Dandelion root has a diuretic effect which helps to reduce water retention and eliminate toxins in the process. However, what makes this one of the best detox drinks is the benefits it brings the body while cleansing it.
According to a South Korean 2010 study performed with rabbits, dandelion root is rich in antioxidants that prevent oxidative stress linked to atherosclerosis, a risk factor for coronary artery disease.
Although the root isn’t as widely studied as the flower, there are some indications that it can also help protect the liver and the kidneys, the two main natural body filters responsible for eliminating toxins, as well as lowering blood pressure.
Ingredients
- 2 tsp of dandelion root, fresh and chopped;
- 1 quarter of water.
Directions
Bring the water to boil in a saucepan. Add the dandelion root, lower the heat, cover and let it simmer for about 1 minute. Remove the pan from the heat and let it sit for about 40 minutes, covered.
Use a strainer to pour the tea into a teapot and discard the roots. The tea is ready to serve.
Note: Due to the diuretic effect of this plant, it is advisable to start with lower doses and increase them progressively. For instance, start with only one cup of tea per day for several days to give the body enough time to adjust and then increase the intake for 2 cups.
